Inclusion – Accessibility – Meaning
I saw the first performance of ‘Conflict to Chorus – A Peace Intermezzo’ by Rev. Prof. June Boyce-Tillman last month at Winchester cathedral. It was unique and very inspiring.
An inclusive whole community concert – children from primary and special schools, various choirs including ones supporting the wellbeing of older adults, choirs and soloists from the University of Winchester, plus the Southern Sinfonia Orchestra – coming together to commemorate the centenary of World War One.
I have never seen inclusion on this scale before. Such a moving evening. Music made accessible for all and WW1 commemorated with powerful/meaningful words.
The concert certainly gave me food for thought for future posibilities …
‘Gary the Gunman’, named by school children was designed and sculpted from de-commissioned rifles donated by The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum. The rifle barrel Gary holds has been transformed into a crude flute which was played during the performance.
